Shim Jeong-seop, CEO of Oriental Commerce
(Busan = News 1) Reporter Kwon Young-ji = We met with Shim Jeong-seop, CEO of Oriental Commerce, which has been recording high growth rates every year.CEO Shim says that there were times when the company faced a crisis due to a funding crunch, but it was able to overcome this through aggressive investment and management.We asked CEO Shim about Oriental Commerce’s growth and future vision.

-What is Oriental Commerce’s current main business area?
▶We export and sell curing covers, vinyl sheets, and construction masking tape. Current production facilities include headquarters in Korea and factories in China and Vietnam.We export to the Americas, Europe, South America, Japan, and Asia, and manufacture and sell biodegradable shopping bags, plastic packaging, and plastic bags to the Chinese market.
-Export performance is very good. What is the growth rate of your main business areas?
▶In 2006, we established a factory in Qingdao, China, and as a result of continuous technology development, new product development, and product quality efforts, we recorded a growth rate of more than 20% to 30% every year.In 2017, a factory was established with new investment in Quang Nam Province, Vietnam, and now has a production facility base that is more than twice that of the Chinese factory.
-What has been the most difficult challenge while expanding your business so far? How did you overcome it?
▶What was difficult while expanding the business was the financial crunch before 2006 due to the global financial crisis.However, we overcame the crisis by working together with all employees to make efforts based on more aggressive investment and management, and by actively focusing on overseas investment and overseas sales.
-What are Oriental Commerce’s future plans and vision that you are looking forward to tomorrow?
▶Based on the current production facility base, we will operate stronger and more solidly, creating new food and developing products to help small and medium-sized businesses.We have plans to grow and develop into a mid-sized company. We will dedicate ourselves to becoming a stronger company that is better than what it is now.
-Why did you join the Junior Marine Conference, a forum for environmental public debate for future generations?
▶Currently, the global climate and environmental crisis is a serious situation. I think it is time to add even a small amount of strength to overcome this.Because we are well aware of the purpose of the Junior Marine Conference, we will actively support you in marine environmental activities at any time, even if it is a small force.
-A word of encouragement to juniors who are interested in the environment for a sustainable earth.
▶Currently, the Earth is not just a space for a few countries or individuals, but a space where all of us coexist and live together.Because we must overcome the environmental crisis, we need the courage of all participants to be more proactive in preserving the environment. we all love the earthI hope that people will take action to protect the environment one by one, starting with small things, with a sense of duty.
-They say that it is a difficult time for local young people to take on challenges and have fervent hopes. As a senior running a business in Busan, what would you say to young people?
▶I think it is important to have positive thoughts and confidence that you will always overcome difficulties even if there are difficult and difficult things in life.Because life is not always an easy path, you can keep in mind that there are difficult situations at any time.I encourage you to take on challenges with confidence and positive thinking.
